US Gymnastics Olympic Team for Tokyo 2020 / Tokyo 2021
After a night full of drama, tears (both of joy and of disappointment), and most of all, exciting gymnastics, we already know the US gymnastics team going to Tokyo. There were 4 team spots and 1 individual spot up for grabs, as the 2nd individual spot had already been allocated to Jade Carey through her world cup results. Day 1 for the women ended with Simone Biles leading the competition (no surprises there) with 60.565 points, nearly 3 points ahead of Sunisa Lee. Simone's teammate, Jordan Chiles, was in 3rd place, followed by an unexpected MyKayla Skinner in 4th, with Grace McCallum just 0.1 behind Skinner in the standings. Biles produced a great performance, throwing her Biles dismount on beam (the hardest in the world) and staying in bounds during her entire floor routine (something she hadn't done in competition this year). The revelation was MyKayla Skinner, who had the meet of her life, hitting every event, even bars, her weakest one, and making her case to get a ticket to Tokyo. With the top 2 gymnasts after 2 days of competition getting automatically selected for the Olympic team, we were set up for a thrilling second night of competition. A record-breaking nearly 21,000 gymnastics fans gathered at St. Louis, MO, to watch the final night of the women's gymnastics U.S. Olympic Team Trials live, some people had driven about 8 hours and some fans came from abroad to witness this event. The NBC broadcast started with the usual talk by commentators Terry Gannon, Tim Daggett, and Nastia Liukin (whose dress received a lot of attention in the gymternet), followed by Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, and Kayla DiCello all hitting their vaults. Cut to uneven bars, where Riley McCusker (the strongest contender for the individual spot) had a fall at the start of her routine, which could seriously jeopardize her chances of making it to Tokyo, though other gymnasts who had fallen at trials had made the team in the past, so not all was lost. The standings after the 1st rotation didn't change for the top 3 athletes, but Grace McCallum had overtaken MyKayla Skinner. The most significant moment during rotation 2 was Kayla DiCello's fall on uneven bars. Then came drama, when Simone Biles fell off beam, and though she had enough margin to keep her lead, she was very upset after her routine. So like in all the great sports competitions, by the time we got to the final rotation, there are still some questions regarding the 4th team spot, as Biles, Suni Lee and Jordan Chiles were well ahead of the rest of the field. The sad note at the end of the competition was Emily Lee's getting injured when she crashed on her double-double back tuck tumbling on floor and she had to be carried off the floor since she could only stand in one foot. Let's hope that she is OK. The standings after the end of the competition are: With their 1st and 2nd spots, Simone Biles and Suni Lee have automatically made the team and Jordan Chiles is also looking like she is going to Tokyo. There are many gymnasts crying with joy, after a job well done, and many athletes' family members crying on the stands. For the gymnasts' parents, this is the last chance to witness their daughters compete before the team flies off to Tokyo as foreign spectators won't be allowed to watch the Olympic Games live in Japan, which made this night even more emotional. And now, we wait while the selection committee deliberates. Tom Forster, the High Performance Team Coordinator has mentioned that he will pick the highest scoring team for the team spots and try to get as many medals as possible with the individual spot. While it remains uncertain whether the US athletes will receive the same high execution scores internationally, no matter which gymnasts make the team, USA is still the favorite team to win gold in Tokyo. After what must have felt like a very long wait, the most decorated USA Olympic gymnast, Shannon Miller, takes the floor to announce the 4 members of the team: Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles and Grace McCallum, and the 2 individual spots for Jade Carey and MyKayla Skinner: the replacement athletes are Kayla DiCello, Kara Eaker, Leanne Wong and Emma Malabuyo. Congratulations to Simone Biles, Suni, Jordan, Grace, MyKayla, Jade, Kayla, Kara, Leanne, Emma, and everybody who competed during what can only be described as a thrilling night.
